Fuel filtration is the last line of defence between stored diesel and the precision components inside a generator engine, pump, or vehicle injection system. Contaminated fuel — carrying water, particulate, microbial biomass, or degradation products — causes injector wear, filter blocking, corrosion, and ultimately, engine or generator failure at the worst possible moment.

Neftgen designs and supplies industrial fuel filtration systems for generator backup applications, fuel storage depots, mobile fuel stations, data centers, airports, and process facilities.

Types of Fuel Contamination

Contaminant Source Effect Removal Method
Free water Condensation, delivery, seals Corrosion, microbial growth, injector damage Water separator / coalescer
Emulsified water Fuel agitation, surfactants As above; harder to remove Coalescer filter (EI 1581)
Particulate >4 micron Tank corrosion, delivery, wear Injector wear, filter blockage Depth filter / absolute filter
Microbial biomass Bacteria, fungi at water/fuel interface Filter blockage, acid corrosion, tank damage Filtration + biocide treatment
Oxidation products Aged diesel, FAME degradation Gum, resin, injector deposits Fuel polishing + filtration

Filtration System Types

1. Primary Pre-Filter (Bulk Filtration)

Installed on the delivery line from tanker to storage tank. Removes gross particulate and free water from incoming fuel. Typical rating: 30–50 micron nominal. Protects the storage tank from external contamination.

2. Transfer Line Filter

Installed between bulk storage and day tank or dispensing point. Protects downstream equipment from tank-generated contamination. Typical rating: 10–30 micron absolute.

3. Final Filter / Microfilter

Installed immediately upstream of the generator fuel inlet or dispenser nozzle. Provides the final cleanliness protection. Typical rating: 3–10 micron absolute, to ISO 4406 Class 16/14/11 or better.

4. Coalescer / Water Separator (EI 1581)

Required for aviation fuel dispensing (Jet A-1) and recommended for generator fuel systems in humid climates or long-storage applications. Coalesces free and emulsified water; rated to Energy Institute EI 1581 Category C or M standard.

5. Fuel Polishing Unit

A continuous recirculation system that draws fuel from the tank, passes it through multi-stage filtration (particulate + coalescer), and returns clean fuel to the tank. Maintains stored fuel in ISO 4406 cleanliness condition continuously. Essential for data center and hospital generator applications where fuel may be stored for 12+ months.

Key Design Parameters

Parameter Design Value
Polishing flow rate Full tank volume circulated every 24–48 hours
Target cleanliness ISO 4406 Class 18/16/13 or better
Water content target <200 mg/kg (ISO 12937)
Filter differential pressure alarm Typically 0.7–1.0 bar (element change-out)
Element change interval Annual or on differential pressure alarm

ATEX Requirements

Fuel filtration systems installed in Zone 1 or Zone 2 areas require ATEX certified components: pumps, motors, junction boxes, and instruments. Pressure gauges and differential pressure indicators must be suitable for flammable liquid service. Neftgen supplies complete ATEX-certified filtration skids with all necessary zone documentation.
